A rare example of abhurite from a find made before the type locality was discovered!!! This rare mineral has only been found as an alteration product of
tin found in long-submerged shipwrecks!!! The following is a description of the locality, courtesy of Mindat:
"Unnamed shipwreck off Hidra island. Stacks of pewter plates were found in the cargo.
These had reacted to the sea water, and a basic tin chloride had been formed filling the space between
the plates. The tin chloride was recognized as a not-yet described naturally occurring substance, but not
described at the time (Griffin et al., 1977). The same mineral was later found in a shipwreck at Sharm Abhur,
The Red Sea and described as a new mineral, abhurite (Matzko et al., 1985)"
This specimen consists of a terrific grouping of sharply formed, lustrous, platy crystals of abhurite!!! The crystals
range in size to over 3mm!!! This specimen is comprised almost entirely of intergrown crystals of abhurite!!! The pictures hardly do it justice - must be seen in
person to be fully appreciated!!!
Good luck and be sure to check out my other exciting mineral auctions on ebay!!!
