A most unusual example of agate indeed!!! This specimen consists of a polished piece of one of the most incredible and curious
examples of agate I have ever seen!!! This specimen consists of four circular colored areas that
exhibit a stunning and unusual iridescence in association with the remaining area taken up by material that has numerous reddish inclusions!!! Upon closer inspection,
one finds that these reddish inclustions are actually the "cores" of columnar or stalactitic growths with colorless agate surrounding them (you can see this in some of the pics)!!!
The iridescent areas are actually concave "lenses" within these columnar growths (again, you can see this in the pics)!!! The iridescence is
caused by a network of complex, disorganized lines within these four circular "lenses"!!! These lines are themselves iridescent and exhibit some curiously geometric and
angular forms!!! While it was difficult to capture such a dynamic feature in the pictures, it is very intense and apparent in person!!! The
old labels note that the locality is only "Oregon" and, while it is superficially similar to sunstone, it most certainly is not!!! There is a note on one of the
old labels that simply says "Singularly unique" - I think that says it all!!! Truly an incredible specimen!!! The pics hardly do it justice!!!
While at first this specimen might superficially resemble sunstone, it is most certainly not!!!
This specimen is from the Albert Peppis Collection and retains his original label!!! We just recently acquired the lifelong collection
