A very rare and unusual example of amber IN MATRIX from Switzerland!!! Examples of amber in matrix are practially unheard of!!! This specimen hosts a fiery, gemmy
nodule of golden amber prominently set in the matrix in addition to several other masses on the reverse!!! Interestingly, this specimen was the first
I have heard of being found by using Google Earth!!! The original collector had seen an unusual example
of amber in matrix in an old musuem and, using the
general locality info listed on its old label began searching the general area on Google Earth!!! After some time he and his partner found what looked
like possible old quarry sites and then traveled to those sites using GPS!!! Of course it was a long
, laborious process and after considerable expense only relatively
small amount of material was recovered!!! Now at least there are a few more examples of amber in matrix from Switzerland available to collectors that
aren't tucked away in a dusty old museum!!! Rare and unusual material to say the least!!! The pics hardly do it justice!!!
