Description/Interesting Notes:
A magnificent example of this rare tourmaline species from the only and type locality in Mexico!!! This specimen consists of a hard ryholite matrix
that hosts an impressive showing of sharp, lustrous, dark brown crystals of buergerite in association with numerous tiny crystals of
topaz as well as some colorless hyalite opal!!! While buergerite crystals are rare, matrix examples are exceedingly more so!!! Usually the buergerite crystals
were found in very fragile,
unstable matrix that tended to crumble apart!!! This matrix is incredibly
hard and is surprisingly rich with tiny topaz crystals (as well as some
tiny, doubly terminated quartz crystals with essentially no prism faces!)!!! This is the first time I have seen buergerite crystals paired with
topaz - as well as hyalite opal!!! The buergerite crystals are sharp and prominently perched on the matrix!!! The crystals are highly lustrous and
exhibit a dark brown color with the characterisitic slightly tiger's-eye like internal play of light!!! While there are some complexly formed crystals present, the crystals are all
complete and undamaged!!! The crystals range in size to over 1cm!!! The topaz crystals range in size to over 4mm!!! The hyalite opal is water-clear and highly lustrous - it is difficult to see in the pics however
it fluoresces bright yellow-green under UV and you can see it very well in those pictures!!!
These old type locality specimens came from a single group of specimens recovered by a single miner and
brought to Tucson in the 1960's - unfortunately the miner died before revealing the exact location to anyone and it remains
lost to this day!!! This is simply an amazing example of this rare "lost locality" tourmaline species indeed!!! This specimen is from the collection
of A.J. Beres as well!!! The pics hardly do it justice!!!
Good luck and be sure to check out my other exciting mineral auctions on ebay!!!
