Description/Interesting Notes:
A magnificent example of rare pink calcite from the famous 1906 find of the Sterlingbush Calcite Cave in New York!!! In
1906, a small "cave" completely lined with unusual pink to lavender calcite crystals was found after a blast in a limestone quarry revealed its
entrance!!! The cave was later reconstructed at the New York State Museum!!! Despite the fact that these
amazing crystals lined a small cave, they are extremely scarce today!!! This is a fantastic example indeed - as it has all of
the features that were so characteristic of the find - unique pink color, complex crystallization, and prominent twinning!!!
The crystals show a complex combination of rhombehedral and scalenohedral forms!!! It was difficult to capture this specimen in the pictures, however
it is quite showy in person!!! The crystals have sharp faces with glassy faces and marked translucence!!! The main, twinned crystal shows
highly complex faces that are simply incredible upon close inspection!!! Although there is some very minor damage, the specimen
is nearly pristine considering its age and history!!! These specimens are next to impossible
to obtain today!!! This specimen has an old museum catalogue number affixed to the bottom as well!!!
The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
Good luck and be sure to check out my other exciting mineral auctions on ebay!!!
