Quartz var. Chalcedony Pseudomorph after Coral

Ballast Point, Tampa Bay, Tampa, Hillsborough Co., Florida

6.43cm x 5cm x 3.44cm

Ex. James G. Manchester (1871-1948)

Description/Interesting Notes:

A magnificent, old time example of chalcedony from Florida!!! This specimen consists of showy, rich, surprisingly thick portion of gem chalcedony after coral!!! This specimen has been expertly polished and is essentially like a giant cabochon!!! Rarely do you see such significant, thick portions of gem chalcedony in these coral pseudomorphs!!! This old time specimen retains an affixed label from James G. Manchester (1871-1948) who succeeded George F. Kunz as president of the New York Mineralogical Club!!! James spent his retirement collecting chalcedony pseudomorphs after coral in Ballast Point and no doubt reserved the very finest for his personal collection!!! The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
