Description/Interesting Notes:
An absolutely superb example of cryolite from Greenland!!! Cryolite is most often seen as massive material, with well formed
crystals being quite rare!!! This specimen hosts a fantastic showing of sharp, lustrous, gemmy crystals of cryolite on a
matrix of massive cryolite!!! Cryolite is well known for having a refractive index that is very similar to water - as a result, a gemmy
crystal of cryolite will "disappear" when submerged in water!!! This specimen is one of those rare instances that actually
hosts gemmy crystals!!! Because the crystals are so colorless and gemmy, they are very difficult to capture in the pics!!! The
crystals are sharply formed cubic crystals and are in fantastic condition!!! The crystals host a selective coating of
iron-stained thomsenolite on one edge, which serves to highlight the crystals in an attractive way in person!!!
The crystals range in size up to over 6mm!!! There is significantly more crystalline material than can be discerned in the pics and the
crystals are quite prominent as well!!! There are some areas of siderite and pyrite scattered throughout the matrix as well!!!
This is a KILLER example of the species in person!!! This specimen is in magnificent condition all around and displays fantastically in person!!!
The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
Good luck and be sure to check out my other exciting mineral auctions on ebay!!! STAY TUNED!!! MORE AUCTIONS WILL BE ADDED SATURDAY NIGHT FOR A SPECIAL 5-DAY AUCTION, ENDING THURSDAY MAY 24th!!!
