Description/Interesting Notes:
"An underground copper mine consisting of two shafts located near Allouez, just north of Calumet.
The Allouez Mining Co. was organized in 1859, but work didn't start until 1869 on the Allouez Conglomerate
lode. Work continued until 1877, when it was leased on tribute until the company resumed control in 1880. In
1885 the mine was again leased to tributers until 1889 when the company resumed control. In 1923, the Allouez
Mining Co. was absorbed by C&H and mining operations ceased shortly after. Minerals that can be found here
include copper, silver, cuprite, malachite, and some nice chrysocolla."
A fantastic, old time example of cuprite and native copper from this seldom referenced Michigan locale!!! This specimen consists of
characteristic, old time congomerate material that consists of rounded cobbles held together by a rich showing of native copper and
lively red cuprite!!! This specimen hosts numerous significant crystals of cuprite scattered throughout!!! Let me just say that this
specimen is WAY better than the pics show - the cuprite crystals are significantly sized with intense red color and marked clarity!!! The
crystals are complex and chunky and there are also complex, bright red areas of almost chalcotricite-like material!!! There
are significant masses of native copper jutting out all over the specimen as well!!! This specimen is simply incredible upon close inspection - and
loaded with significant cuprite crystals!!! This specimen retains an old label from the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum as well!!! Old material!!!
The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
Good luck and be sure to check out my other exciting mineral auctions on ebay!!!
STAY TUNED!!! MORE AUCTIONS WILL BE ADDED MONDAY NIGHT FOR A SPECIAL 3-DAY AUCTION, ENDING THURSDAY MARCH 28th!!!
