Description/Interesting Notes:
A rare, old time example of datolite var. botryolite from Norway!!! Botryolite is a rare botryoidal variety of datolite and this
specimen is from the type locality for this rare varietal!!! This specimen hosts a rich showing of unusual botryoidal datolite in
association with scattered crystals of gem clear barite!!! The broad face of this specimen hosts a highly textured surface that is richly
covered with grayish-tan botryoidal crystals of datolite!!! The datolite botryoids are somewhat translucent and, upon close examination appear to have a somewhat
complex surface!!! The barite crystals are present as scattered, highly complex crystals with water-clear gem clarity and razor-sharp faces!!! This specimen is
from the collection of famed collector Bernard G. Amend (1821-1911)!!! Amend was a German born
pharmacist and entrepeneur who pioneered the importation of European-made glassware and built a thriving business whose customers included Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and
E.R. Squibb, among countless others!!! Amend was instrumental in establishing the American Chemical Society and was also chairman of the New York Mineralogical Club (holding meetings at his house)!!!
George Kunz served as secratary of the club under Amend's chairmanship!!! This specimen retains two large size labels (note the size in the pictures - the specimen
measures over 8.5cm!) from Amend as well!!! The pics hardly do this old timer justice!!!
Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
Good luck and be sure to check out my other exciting mineral auctions on ebay!!! STAY TUNED!!! MORE AUCTIONS WILL BE ADDED MONDAY NIGHT FOR A SPECIAL 3-DAY AUCTION, ENDING THURSDAY MARCH 24th!!!
