Description/Interesting Notes:
A gorgeous, old time example of fluorite from this classic locality!!! This specimen consists of a large twinned cubic crystal of intense emerald green
fluorite from the Heights Mine!!! These old time Heights Mine fluorite specimens are second to none and set the standard of beauty for Weardale fluorites!!!
Although they are somewhat similar to the more familiar contemporary material from the nearby Rogerley Mine, the
crystals from the Heights Mine have a characteristic fineness that is an order of magnitude beyond anything seen
from any other locality!!! These rare, large interpenetration
twins are quite scarce on todays market and date to earlier finds at the locality!!! This specimen consists of a sharp, cubic
interpenetration twin that has brilliant glassy luster, gemmy clarity, and exceptional color!!! Unlike the Rogerley material, this specimen has a much more lively green color that
borders on bluish-emerald and there is a faint, thin outer phantom of purple as well!!! Of course, the specimen is intensely fluorescent and exhibits the famed daylight fluorescence these
Weardale fluorites are so famous for (showing an intense purple cast in sunlight)!!! Despite its age, this specimen is in magnificent condition - having only some small
cleavage on one corner that does not detract in any dramatic way!!! In person this specimen is simply stunning!!! Classic beauty!!!
This is old time material from the collection of Albert Peppis!!! This specimen
retains its original Peppis collection label as well!!! The pics hardly do it justice!!! Albert Peppis was born July 5th, 1899 and died July 12th, 1989 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where his collection had layed dormant for nearly 20 years until our acquisition of the collection!!! Albert was an avid mineral collector and prolific field collector throughout the northeastern United States!!! Peppis collected most prolifically between the late 1920's throughout the 1960's although he coninued to acquire specimens in his later years as well!!! Albert was both a member of the Franklin Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society and the New York City Mineralogical Society!!! Peppis was a close friend of Alvin and Raymond Schortmann and collected extensively with them at the Ruggles Mine in New Hampshire during the trips that began their mineral dealing careers!!!
