Description/Interesting Notes:
A historic, old time example of silver-rich galena from Idaho!!! This specimen is from the Ellen Stilts Mine
(also known as the Ellen Stilts Lode) and consists of a dense mass of argentiferous galena with an outer rind of cerussite intergrown
with galena!!! Upon close inspection with a loupe or scope one can see tiny cerussite crystals as well as spongiform-like areas
of partially altered argentiferous galena (possible minor acanthite present as well)!!!! The Ellen Stilts Mine was in the Bullion District of
historic Alturas county!!! Alturas county was only in existence from 1864-1895!!! This unique locality was noted for its unusually rich ore
of argentiferous galena and was cited as such in a report to the U.S. Bureau of the Mint in 1882!!! This is old time material dating to the
19th century and retains an old label from the Michigan College of Mines as well!!!
The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
Good luck and be sure to check out my other exciting mineral auctions on ebay!!!
