Description/Interesting Notes:
A rare and historic old time example of uraninite from Portugal!!! This specimen likely dates to the 1700's and
came from the collection of Alexandre-Charles Besson (1725-1809)!!! Besson was a prolific French naturalist and was
Inspector of Mines!!! This specimen hosts a significant mass of black uraninite in association with an unidentified
bright yellow species!!! The label describes the associated
species as a probable oxysulfate of uranium - "probablement oxysulphure d'Uranium"!!!
This specimen retains an old, handscripted label from the Sorbonne Mineral Museum that is dated 1898 and
notes that the specimen is from the collection of Alexandre-Charles Besson (1725-1809)!!!
The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
