Description/Interesting Notes:
A magnificent, old time example of rare native iron from Greenland!!! Iron, as a native element, is
quite rare because it so readily oxidizes and forms other compounds!!! Most examples of elemental
iron are usually encountered as meteorites, with actual terrestrial examples of native iron being
very scarce indeed!!! Most examples of native iron from this classic Greenland locality consist of
thin, brittle, rusty, friable masses - however this specimen consists of a large, significant mass that is SOLID and DENSE!!!
Although it might be difficult to appreciate from the pics - I think that this might be one of the
finest Greenland native iron specimens I have seen gram for gram!!!
There are some high-relief areas where the specimen has been gently polished and show a bright metallic iron just below
the surface!!! Old time Greenland native iron specimens of such as this quite scarce indeed!!!
The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
This specimen is from the collections of Ralph Dietz and Tony Nikischer and retains its original label from the Dietz collection!!! We just acquired the 6000+ specimen PERSONAL collection of Tony Nikischer
and there are going to be some very exciting minerals to come in the upcoming days and weeks!!!
Good luck and be sure to check out my other exciting mineral auctions on ebay!!! STAY TUNED!!! MORE AUCTIONS WILL BE ADDED SATURDAY NIGHT FOR A SPECIAL 5-DAY AUCTION, ENDING THURSDAY DECEMBER 20th!!!
