Description/Interesting Notes:
A rare, historic example of magnetite from Port Henry, New York!!! These old time magnetite specimens date back to the 1800's!!! This
specimen consists of a partially twinned octahedral crystal of magnetite!!! This specimen is from the collection of John Birkinbine
who was a two time president of the American Institute of Mining Engineers as well as a founding member and secretary of the United States
Association of Charcoal Iron Workers, and long–time editor of its journal!!! Birkinbine seved in the Union Army during the Civil War and
also served as the U.S. Geological Survey's expert on iron ores!!! Apparently, these amazing magnetite specimens were collected by
Birkinbine in 1872-73 and we lent to Foote for the 1876 Centennial display in Philadelphia!!! These classic old time beauties are
extremely scarce indeed!!! This specimen is in terrific condition, save for some damage on one corner - however, as you can see, it
still displays fantastically!!! The pics hardly do it justice!!!
Good luck and be sure to check out my other exciting mineral auctions on ebay!!!
