Description/Interesting Notes: An absolutely extraordinary example of magnetite from this famous New York locality!!! While the magnetite specimens from this locality are truly exceptional examples of the species - this specimen is notable in that it is a rare, pocket specimen and hasn't been etched out of matrix like the overwhelming majority of specimens!!! This specimen has absolutely TOP luster and razor-sharp faces!!! The crystals exhibit the characteristic cubic habit with complexly modified edges and faces!!! The crystals are undamaged and complete!!! There are also numerous sharp, lustrous crystals of sphalerite in association as well!!! The sphalerite crystals have gem clarity and range in color from golden to COLORLESS!!! Upon close inspection there are crystals of optically clear, colorless gem sphalerite that are unlike anything I have ever seen!!! It is always difficult to capture highly lustrous, darkly colored minerals in photos and I must say that this specimen is SO much better than these pictures show!!! Truly an exceptional Balmat magnetite - for its size I have never seen another one of such quality!!! The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
