Description/Interesting Notes:
A fantastic, old time orthoclase "Carlsbad twin" crystal from the type locale - Karlsbad, Czech Republic!!! These original, old time specimens date to the
mid to early 1800's and are today only seen in museums and historic collections!!! This specimen consists of a large, complete, sharply twinned orthoclase crystal with the
characteristic appearance for the locale!!! What makes this specimen even more impressive is that it has fantastic provenance as well!!!
This classic beauty is from the collections of Morris Ketchum Jesup (1830-1908), Dr. Thomas Egleston (1832-1900), and Columbia University School of Mines!!!
Dr. Egleston was the FOUNDER of the School of Mines at Columbia!!! And Morris Ketchum Jesup was an important and significant banker and philanthropist!!!
Ketchum was appointed president of the American Museum of Natural History in 1881!!! In addition to funding Admiral Peary's famous arctic
expiditions he was also one of the founders of the YMCA and was knighted by Czar Nicholas II of Russia (it is worthwhile to check
Jesup out on google)!!! Simply a magnificent example of this historic occurence!!! Rare old time material!!!
The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
