Description/Interesting Notes:
A rare, old time example of rare mercurian tetrahedrite from the type locality in Austria!!! This specimen hosts a handsome grouping of
sharp, prominent crystals of mercurian tetrahedrite, known as "Schwazite" proudly perched on a matrix comprised of dolomite, quartz, and calcite crystals!!!
The crystals exhibit complex habits and the characteristic black color indicative of this rare tetrahedrite varietal!!! The crystals
range in size to 1.5cm!!! Rare, old
time material from the classic locality!!! This specimen retains several old labels including a label from the Dr. Robert
Herzenberg Collection (1885-1955)!!! Dr. Herzenberg made significant contributions to mineralogy and discovered 8 new mineral
species while working as chief chemist at a lab in Oururo, Bolivia!!! The mineral
Herzenbergite is also named for him!!! Dr. Herzenberg received his Ph.D. in Mineralogy from the University of Hamburg in 1911
but later moved from Germany to Bolivia during World War II!!! While there he also helped his family and other Jews
escape to Bolivia during the war and
helped found a school in Bolivia for the children of all the families emmigrating to the area!!! Simply a fantastic example of
this rare tetrahedrite varietal with great provenance as well!!! The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
