Native Silver in Pink Calcite
Silver Islet mine, Silver Islet, Sibley Township, Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Canada
4.5cm x 4.34cm x .91cm
Description/Interesting Notes:
A rare, old time example of native silver from this historic locality!!! This specimen consists of a matrix
of attractive pink calcite that hosts a rich showing of darkly colored silver & cobalt sulphides in addition to
brilliant patches of native silver!!! This specimen as been cut and polished on both sides and the side
with the rich showing of native silver has a coating of acrylic epoxy to preserve its brilliance!!!
This is OLD material that dates to mid to late 1800's!!! This mine flooded and closed in 1883!!! Specimens
from this locality are quite scarce and highly sought after today!!! This specimen came from old material that came from the A.E. Seaman
Museum - the material had not been catalogued but was noted as coming from the German mineralogist B. Klose!!!
The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
Good luck and be sure to check out my other exciting mineral auctions on ebay!!!
