A terrific, old time example of spinel from Sri Lanka!!! This specien consists of a highly complex group of intergrown
spinel crystals!!! The crystals have relatively sharp octahedral faces with numerous complex and curious modifications!!! The
crystals have glassy luster and a very slightly greenish tan color - however the color appears to be on the surface only since you can see other
areas where the crystals most certainly have a very dark colored core right below the surface!!! Unique old time Sri Lanka material!!! This specimen retains its original Pohl label!!!
Wolfgang Pohl worked in the mining industry in Namibia in the 70s and 80s and was a
prolific collector and dealer during and after this time!!! He would make trips back
and forth to his native Germany trading specimens he had acquired in Africa for
worldwide specimens!!! Pohl was rather meticulous with his labeling and record keeping
with most of the specimens in the collection having catalogue numbers, label with info
on locale, source/dealer info, acquisition date, and any other relevant notes!!!
However, the most interesting feature is that most of the labels also had a small
sketch of the specimen on the reverse side as well!!
