Description/Interesting Notes:
A classic, old time example of "roasted ore" from Colorado!!! The Cripple Creek area is famous for its rich gold deposits, however the
great majority of the region's gold is found as gold tellurides like sylvanite and calaverite!!! In order for
prospectors to extract the
gold from this rich telluride ore they would roast it at high heat in order to drive off the tellurium!!! As the tellurium was driven off, the
native gold would "sweat" out of the ore through the fine cavities and channels left behind by the evaporated calaverite or sylvanite crystals!!!
This specimen consists of a sylvanite-rich specimen that has been roasted and exhibits a rich showing of prominent balls of native
gold scatterd across its surface!!! There is much more gold present than it first appears, as there are scores of minute balls present as well!!! This
specimen retains an old collection label from Joe Cilen and there are also two additional, older catalogue numbers affixed to the specimen as well!!!
Upon close inspection one can see the cavities left behind by the now absent sylvanite crystals - often near the base of the native
gold balls!!! Classic old time material!!!
The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
Good luck and be sure to check out my other exciting mineral auctions on ebay!!! STAY TUNED!!! MORE AUCTIONS WILL BE ADDED SATURDAY NIGHT FOR A SPECIAL 5-DAY AUCTION, ENDING THURSDAY OCTOBER 20th!!!
