Description/Interesting Notes:
A magnificent example of thorianite from Madagascar!!! The overwhelming majority of thorianite specimens from
Madagascar occur as loose crystals with no associated matrix!!! This specimen is a very rare example of
thorianite var. uranothoricanite set in a calcite matrix!!! The crystals are present as an intergrown group of
crystals that exhibit characterisitic cubic form and range in size to 1.15 cm!!! The crystals are lustrous and prominently
exposed!!! The crystals are lustrous and jet-black with predominant cubic forms (the complex, irregular features should
not be mistaken for damage)!!! The contrast with the matrix makes for a very handsome example of this rare, thorium and uranium
bearing species indeed!!!
The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
This specimen is from the collection of Tony Nikischer and retains an
original collection label as well!!! This specimen was originally acquired from the Bureau de Recherches Geologiques et Minieres (BRGM) in
France!!! We just acquired the 6000+ specimen PERSONAL collection of Tony Nikischer
and there are going to be some very exciting minerals to come in the upcoming days and weeks!!!
