An absolutely magnificent example of uytenbogaardtite, a rare silver-gold sulfide, and native silver from this famous historic
locality!!! This specimen consists of a very rich showing of rare uytenbogaardtite, intergrown with a very rich showing of native silver!!! There
is a small amount of quartz matrix and some stephanite in association as well!!! While the Comstock Lode was an extraordinarily rich find
of silver, the overwhelming majority of that silver was recovered as silver-bearing mineral species rather than native silver!!! Examples
of native silver from the Comstock Lode are quite rare!!! Additionally, this is a very rich showing of the rare gold-bearing species Uytenbogaardtite as well (this is
one of the co-type localities for the species!)!!! The majority of the darkly colored material is massive uytenbogaardtite and the native silver
is present as twin-white to silvery gray massive material richly distributed throughout!!! This is an extraordinary and significant specimen from this
historic, 19th century locality!!!
Specimens from this locality are quite scarce today, as very few
specimens survived smelting in the fervent search for riches and the locality was effectively exausted by 1880!!!
Nevada is known as "The Silver State" due to
its rich silver-mining history and it
all began in this famous district!!!
This specimen retains an old label from Forrest Cureton as well!!!
The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!
