A very unusual example of zircon from Sri Lanka!!! This specimen exhibits a very rare, and VERY unusual habit for the species!!! This specimen was
initially acquired in an old collection of sapphire crystals from Sri Lanka!!! The collection was mounted in a riker mount and
contained a wide variety of habits and colors of sapphire crystals, but this one immediately stood out!!! However, I think it is worthy to note that this
zircon crystal is so unusual that it was at one point casually mistaken for a strange sapphire crystal!!! The crystal has a highly complex, almost scalenohedral termination
with hoppered faces!!! The crystal appears to be a floater, with the base also showing some unusual hoppering!!! The faces are sharp and highly lustrous!!! The outer millimeter
or so of the crystal is quite gemmy and it has a rich, reddish brown color!!! This specimen is simply incredible in person!!! The pics hardly do it justice!!! A
very unusual zircon indeed!!!
