An amazing example of zunyite from South Africa!!! This specimen consists of an unusual, COLOR-CHANGE matrix of microcrystalline diaspore with pyrophyllite and
kaolinite that hosts a rich showing of sharp zunyite crystals!!! The zunyite crystals are appreciably sized, razor-sharp, lustrous, and gemmy!!! They have a light tan color with many
of the crystals having red nuclei in their centers!!! There are also numerous twinned crystals as well!!! Even more exciting is the fact that this matrix turns from purple under
incandescent light to deep green under sunlight (or full spectrum fluorescent)!!! The pictures show it as magenta under incandescent light and hardly capture the
green color under fluorescent - HOWEVER, in person this specimen changes from PURPLE to GREEN in a VERY PRONOUNCED COLOR CHANGE!!! The cool thing about the
matrix changing color is that the zunyite crystals seem to "pop" after the matrix turns to green - you have simply got to see it in person!!! This specimen
was given to Prof. Heinrich from F.H.S. Vermaas who did significant work on the species from this locality that was published in American Mineralogist in 1952!!! This specimen
retains its original label from the Heinrich (Michigan University) Collection and the
label retains details notes regarding the matter on the reverse!!! The pics don't even come close to doing this unique specimen justice!!!
